My Reaction to Disgrace?

One thing I am certain of, is that Disgrace is definitely one of those books that I will forget in a couple months' time due to the sheer puzzlement I felt throughout my reading the novel. Why does David Lurie never learn his lesson? Why does Lucy never tell the police about the rape? Considering the simplicity of the writing style and description of the novel, there is little to support whatever theory one might have about the characters. I did very much enjoy the allusions though, and found the juxtaposition of David Lurie's life with Byron's to be particularly interesting. I am certain it does deserve the international acclaim it has received, but I am currently unable to decide for myself. Perhaps once I have a firmer grasp on the characters and themes of the novel, I will be able to better judge the novel. If I did recommend to others in this point in time, it would be to see their opinion and understanding of the novel.

Danny i couldnt agree more with what you said ! It is the kind of book you'd forget about in a while,i didn't really see it as significant or THAT intresting either....hmm maybe we didn't get the point of it, or the main theme? God knows. Anw, i liked the part where you stated the questions all of us are wondering about...

You're very right about how uninteresting it is. I never imagined a book of this calibre would seem so boring and so non-engaging. Also, I can't be one to judge too much about the allusions, mainly because I didn't really notice any. The simplistic style of writing, though deliberate, kindof took me into a realm of simplicity, making me feel like it wasn't really a book you would want to analyze. Also, by leaving so much unsaid, it really does weaken the messages the author is trying to put across in my opinion, so being that vague has its disadvantages. I still disagree on the fact that it deserved the booker prize, because I really don't feel it did. Or perhaps I still don't know enough to judge. *shrug*
Anyway, great paragraph, I liked reading what you thought about it :)
